Mine/UXO Impact on Lebanon
By the end of year 2004 it was reported that due to
mine/UXO, there were 2130 injuries and 1772 deaths in
Lebanon. The reduction in number of casualties is
attributed to successful mine risk education and major
clearance activities in the most highly afflicted areas
in the south. The table below shows the distribution of
mine/UXO victims by year, 2000-2004.

The overwhelming
number of males among civilian casualties emphasizes the
importance of gender considerations in mine risk
education and mine victim assistance.

Distribution of Civilian Mine Casualties by Age and
Gender
The Landmine Impact
Survey (LIS) conducted by Mines Advisory Group (MAG)
during 2002/03 stated that ‘the profile of the average
mine incident victim in Lebanon is a working-age male
engaged in income generating or leisure-time activities.
The data indicate that 28 recent victims are children
under the age of 15’.
